My girlfriend, who is also Black, would counter with, \u201cWhy would he want to be on that team? Seriously, have you seen that team?\u201d Yes, I would say, all too much, for far too long. And we\u2019d laugh, because it was funny-ish.<\/p>\n<p>I was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2019\/08\/toni-morrison-free-white-gaze\/595675\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adopted by a white family<\/a> and raised in a primarily white rural <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England<\/a> town. I then spent my life, well into adulthood, seeking out Blackness and trying to arrive at a place where I could feel unambiguous in my identity as a Black woman. My son opting to identify as white would have been the opposite of my journey. But as he grew older, I actually stopped worrying that he\u2019d be taken as white\u2014and became more worried that he\u2019d be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.essence.com\/news\/colorado-black-teen-racially-profiled-channing-cowan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">profiled<\/a> by the police as Black.
