In May 2017, she was named <a href=\"https:\/\/artsandmuseums.utah.gov\/poet-laureate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Utah\u2019s Poet Laureate<\/a> and received a 2019 Academy of American Poets\u2019 Poets Laureate Fellowship. <a href=\"https:\/\/wwnorton.com\/books\/9781324003588\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Appropriate: A Provocation<\/em><\/a>, which examines cultural appropriation, was published from W.W. Norton in Feb. 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Her work has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Amy Lowell Poetry Traveling Fellowship, a Fulbright Fellowship, a Civitella Ranieri Residency, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, Pushcart Prizes (2009, 2013), Narrative\u2019s Poetry Prize, the AWP Creative Nonfiction Prize, and various state arts council awards. Her poems and essays have appeared in <em>The New York Times Magazine<\/em>, <em>American Poetry Review<\/em>, <em>Kenyon Review<\/em>, <em>Poetry<\/em>, <em>The New Republic<\/em>, <em>Tin House<\/em>, the <em>Best American Poetry<\/em> series (2012, 2013, 2017, 2018, 2019), and on National Public Radio, among others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RUBEN QUESADA<\/strong>: What is the earliest memory you have about your relationship to literature?<\/p>\n<p><strong>PAISLEY REKDAL<\/strong>: I recall when I felt I understood something about literature that other people didn\u2019t. It was in fifth grade, when we were discussing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lord_of_the_Flies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Lord of the Flies<\/em><\/a>, and the teacher asked who the self-sacrificial character Piggy might also remind us of. Piggy was meant to stand in for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jesus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesus<\/a> and I remember muttering that in class while the rest of the students looked a little baffled.
