{"id":63546,"date":"2022-03-25T19:57:21","date_gmt":"2022-03-25T19:57:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=63546"},"modified":"2022-03-25T20:04:57","modified_gmt":"2022-03-25T20:04:57","slug":"how-are-we-still-debating-interracial-marriage-in-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=63546","title":{"rendered":"How Are We Still Debating Interracial Marriage in 2022?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/25\/opinion\/mike-braun-loving-virginia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>How Are We Still Debating Interracial Marriage in 2022?<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a><br \/>\n2022-03-25<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jbouie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jamelle Bouie<\/strong><\/a>, Opinion Columnist<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/25\/opinion\/mike-braun-loving-virginia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 98%; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2022\/03\/27\/opinion\/25bouie_3\/25bouie_3-superJumbo.jpg?quality=75&amp;auto=webp\"><\/a><figcaption style=\"font-size: x-small; width: 98%; text-align:center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mildred_and_Richard_Loving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mildred and Richard Loving<\/a>, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=415\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won their case<\/a> against a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=14135\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia law that banned interracial marriage<\/a>. <em>Getty Images<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou would be OK with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supreme_Court_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supreme Court<\/a> leaving the question of interracial marriage to the states?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mike_Braun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senator Mike Braun<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indiana<\/a> while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfyi.org\/news\/articles\/us-sen-mike-braun-scotus-should-leave-abortion-interracial-marriage-to-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fielding questions<\/a> from local media on Tuesday. \u201cIf you\u2019re not wanting the Supreme Court to weigh in on issues like that, you\u2019re not going to be able to have your cake and eat it, too,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s hypocritical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Braun walked this back, of course, undoubtedly aware of the damage it could do if he let it stand. \u201cEarlier during a virtual press conference, I misunderstood a line of questioning that ended up being about interracial marriage,\u201d he said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/live-blog\/ketanji-brown-jackson-confirmation-hearings-live-updates-rcna20973?featureFlag=false#rcrd71\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a statement to NBC News<\/a>. \u201cLet me be clear on that issue \u2014 there is no question the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constitution_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Constitution<\/a> prohibits discrimination of any kind based on race, that is not something that is even up for debate, and I condemn racism in any form, at all levels and by any states, entities or individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As damage control goes, this was unpersuasive. It\u2019s not just that the questions he originally answered were clear; it\u2019s that Braun\u2019s answer was consistent with what he had said throughout the news conference. His argument to reporters was that the existence of certain rights, and the particular shape they take, was best left to the states. He used abortion and marijuana legalization as examples. The world he and his colleagues are working toward is one in which the national government defers the question of civil and political rights to the states. And it is in the states, free from federal oversight, where people like Braun can exercise real control over what you might do, how you might live and who you might love.
