My mother, a Black Fijian woman who proudly embraced her natural \u2019fro, was waiting for me at the bus stop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBye, n***a,\u201d another kid said loudly, as I got up from my seat.<\/p>\n<p>As an adult, due to my mixed heritage, many people describe me as \u201cwhite-appearing\u201d or racially ambiguous. But in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nova_Scotia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nova Scotia<\/a> in the 1980s \u2014 with my tanned skin and thick curly hair in a sea of whiteness \u2014 I was reminded on a daily basis that I was different. I was an other.
