In 2016, inspired by civil rights heroes, the then-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco_49ers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco 49ers<\/a> quarterback rocked the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Football_League\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NFL<\/a> by taking a knee during the national anthem to protest police brutality, sparking protests and backlash. That fall, he and his partner <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nessa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nessa<\/a> (known by her first name only) established <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knowyourrightscamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Know Your Rights Camp<\/a>, a youth-focused organization with principles that echo the Black Panthers\u2019 Ten-Point Program for communities, along with a downloadable set of educational resources, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knowyourrightscamp.com\/cibw-curriculum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colin in Black &amp; White: The Kaepernick Curriculum<\/a>. He went on to found Kaepernick Publishing, for which he edited a collection of essays by social justice leaders, Abolition for the People: The Movement for a Future Without Policing or Prisons.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Kaepernick Publishing and Scholastic have teamed up to publish Kaepernick\u2019s debut picture book (as part of a multibook deal), the autobiographical <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=61105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I Color Myself Different<\/a><em>, with illustrations by <a href=\"https:\/\/ericwilkersonart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eric Wilkerson<\/a>, an artist known for his high-energy fantasy illustrations. Wilkerson\u2019s paintings grace the covers of Nic Stone\u2019s Shuri books and Kwame Mbalia\u2019s <\/em>Tristan Strong<em> series, and Kaepernick was familiar with his work; the author and illustrator spoke back and forth to fine-tune the images of a young Colin in <\/em>I Color Myself Different<em>.
