Thurgood Marshall hired her out of college to work for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NAACP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N.A.A.C.P.<\/a> on school desegregation cases. <em>Bill Sullivan\/Newsday RM via Getty Images<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>She helped <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thurgood_Marshall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thurgood Marshall<\/a> prepare for his <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supreme_Court_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supreme Court<\/a> fight and later took on de facto school segregation across the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/June_Shagaloff_Alexander\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">June Shagaloff Alexander<\/a>, whose work for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NAACP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">N.A.A.C.P.<\/a> and its legal arm in the 1950s and \u201960s put her at the forefront of the nationwide fight for school integration and made her a close confidante of civil rights figures like Thurgood Marshall and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Baldwin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Baldwin<\/a>, died on March 29 at her home in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tel_Aviv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tel Aviv<\/a>. She was 93&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Although she was white, her dark complexion sometimes led people to assume she was Black, to the point of barring her from certain whites-only public spaces, an experience that she said shaped her early commitment to civil rights.<\/p>\n<p>But this ambiguity proved to be an asset in her work.
