Colin Kaepernick\u2019s<\/a> I Color Myself Different<\/em><\/a> is a new children\u2019s book based on the football player\u2019s true and inspiring journey as a child learning the value of embracing and celebrating their Black identity \u201cthrough the power of radical self-love\u201d and knowing their inherent worth.<\/p>\n

In the book, illustrated by Eric Wilkerson<\/a>, a young, adopted Colin goes on a journey of unpacking his identity and its uniqueness<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was 5-years-old, I was given an assignment in school: \u2018draw a picture of yourself and your family.\u2019 I drew my white adoptive family with a yellow crayon and then picked up a brown crayon to draw myself,\u201d the former San Franciso 49ers player told PEOPLE<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Highlighting that assignment\u2019s impact, the 34-year-old athlete said the \u201crevelatory moment taught me an important lesson about embracing my Black identity through the power of self-love and eventually helped me to understand how my brown skin was connected to my Blackness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAbove all, I hope that I Color Myself Different<\/em> can inspire young people to embrace their power, love themselves and walk in the truth of their own path,\u201d the activist continued…<\/p>\n\n\n
