Aidan used to like my meat loaf, but everything changes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"paywall\" class=\"content-wrapper\">\n<p>Aidan\u2019s Black now. Partly because he feels more comfortable in his skin at Compass High, whereas I think he felt that he needed to be White while he was at Riordan. Partly because of teenage rebellion. If my husband Brian and I were Black, I\u2019m pretty sure he\u2019d say he was white.<\/p>\n<p>When he was little, he used to insist on his whiteness. One afternoon, after kindergarten, he got into the front seat of the Griffin (our old family car) and announced, \u201cZane\u2019s the only one who has to sit in the back of the car.\u201d Aidan had missed the nuances in his teacher\u2019s lesson about <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rosa_Parks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rosa Parks<\/a>. It is one of the few times I\u2019ve ever seen Zane cry.<\/p>\n<p>Aidan&#8217;s Black now.
