Finally, it seemed, folks like me had found a role model.<\/p>\n<p>Yet when it came time for Obama to shift into \u201ccandidate\u201d mode, he clearly calculated that positioning himself as black, rather than biracial, was the wisest way to secure the presidency. Little changed once he entered to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oval_Office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oval Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, despite having as much white heritage as black, Obama <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=6435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">formally marked himself African-American<\/a> on his 2010 Census form. The timing was important: That year, for one of the first times ever, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Census_Bureau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Census Bureau<\/a> included a multi-racial category. I was thrilled to check the box\u2014and had naively hoped the President would too.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a decade later, we now have <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meghan_Markle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meghan Markle<\/a>, the biracial future bride of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prince_Harry%2C_Duke_of_Sussex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Britain\u2019s Prince Harry<\/a>.
