a new book focuses on the wide influence of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Africa<\/a> abroad, writes Angela Cobbinah<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alessandro_de%27_Medici,_Duke_of_Florence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALESSANDRO de Medici, Duke of Florence<\/a>, virtuoso 18th-century French violinist and composer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joseph Bologne<\/a> and 1922 world light heavyweight boxing champion <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battling_Siki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battling Siki<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">France<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Senegal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senegal<\/a> are probably people we know little about, if at all.<\/p>\n<p>They are part of a forgotten European past explored by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OlivetteOtele\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olivette Otele<\/a> in her scholarly book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=63816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>African Europeans<\/em><\/a>, which travels through time to reveal how trade, war, slavery and colonialism resulted in a black presence in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europe<\/a> from as far back as the third century.<\/p>\n<p>This is where Otele, professor of the history and memory of slavery at Bristol University, kicks off, telling the story of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Maurice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St Maurice<\/a>, Egyptian leader of a Roman legion who was famously executed for refusing to crush a Christian revolt in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gaul\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaul<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrated as a martyr across <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany<\/a>, he is clearly represented as an African in a statue at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magdeburg_Cathedral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Magdeburg Cathedral<\/a> and other church iconography.<\/p>\n<p>Black saints and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary,_mother_of_Jesus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madonnas<\/a> appeared across Europe in the 12th and 13th centuries, perhaps Otele speculates, to symbolise the transformative power of the Catholic Church in converting those it considered heathen&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire review <a href=\"https:\/\/www.islingtontribune.co.uk\/article\/impact-of-the-forgotten-black-europeans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scholars, poets, writers, composers&#8230;
