To do that, the technologist mixed in fluorescent tags that would glow if Harried’s immune defense forces would latch onto the donor’s cells in preparation for an attack. If, after a few hours, the machine found lots of glowing, it meant the kidney transplant would be doomed. It stayed dark: They were a match.

“I was floored,” said Harried…

Scientists widely agree that race is a social construct, yet it is often conflated with biology, leaving the impression that a person’s race governs how the body functions.

[12,2850,2039,8,20
33578,33581,33592,33580,33583,33582,17002,33584,33585,33588,33586,773,33587,33577,33579,778,33590,33591,33589
post-63916","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-articles","category-audio","category-health-medicine","category-media-archive","category-usa","tag-alphonso-harried","tag-barnes-jewish-hospital","tag-barry-freedman","tag-cara-anthony","tag-kaiser-family-foundation","tag-kaiser-health-news","tag-keith-norris","tag-kff","tag-khn","tag-lisa-mcelroy","tag-marva-moxey-mims","tag-missouri","tag-nwamaka-eneanya","tag-pat-holterman-hommes","tag-rae-ellen-bichell","tag-st-louis","tag-tanjala-purnell","tag-tarek-alhamad","tag-vanessa-grubbs
["GET
