Petty<\/strong><\/a>, Associate Professor in the department of Radio\/Television\/Film<br \/>\n<em>Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.criterion.com\/current\/posts\/8038-imitation-of-life-on-passing-between\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 80%; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/criterion-production\/editorial_content_posts\/hero\/8038-\/8NeNHQieENKtwIzu8xlcBD1e8DrcK6_original.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2005, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/programs\/national-film-preservation-board\/film-registry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Film Preservation Board<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Library of Congress<\/a> added the 1934 version of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imitation_of_Life_(1934_film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Imitation of Life<\/em><\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/programs\/national-film-preservation-board\/film-registry\/complete-national-film-registry-listing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Film Registry<\/a>, its roster of \u201cculturally, historically, or aesthetically significant\u201d films. Archivist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/static\/programs\/national-film-preservation-board\/documents\/imitation_life.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ariel Schudson\u2019s essay<\/a> marking the occasion touts the film as \u201ca defining moment in the history of women in film and a watershed moment for African American casting in Hollywood.\u201d Directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_M._Stahl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John M. Stahl<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Universal_Pictures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universal Pictures<\/a>, and based on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fannie_Hurst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fannie Hurst\u2019s<\/a> best-selling 1933 prefeminist rags-to-riches novel of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imitation_of_Life_(novel)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">same name<\/a>, the film raises issues of gender roles, labor, race, identity, and the American dream in a melodramatic framework that might have otherwise been regarded as that of a mere \u201cladies\u2019 picture.\u201d Indeed, much of the film\u2019s action focuses on the domestic sphere and the intimate, homey matters regularly dismissed as women\u2019s work.
