Morgan<\/a> and expert on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Incunable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">incunabula<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the most well-known American librarians and experts in illuminated manuscripts (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Incunable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">incunabula<\/a>) in the early-mid twentieth century, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Belle_da_Costa_Greene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Belle da Costa Greene<\/a> helped build the renowned <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morgan_Library_%26_Museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morgan Library and Museum<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York City<\/a>. Indeed, she was known as \u201cthe soul of the Morgan Library.\u201d Greene also summered annually with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vanderbilt_family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vanderbilts<\/a> in their \u201ccottages\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newport,_Rhode_Island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newport, Rhode Island<\/a>. She began her career as the personal librarian of financier <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._P._Morgan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Pierpont Morgan<\/a>, one of the richest men in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gilded_Age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gilded Age America<\/a>. She ended it as the library\u2019s first director from 1924-48.<\/p>\n<p>Born Belle Marion Greener in 1879, the green-eyed Greene was the daughter of the first African American graduate of Harvard College. She also belonged to the colored elite in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington, DC<\/a>. She accessed the rarefied worlds of the Morgans and Vanderbilts by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cpassing\u201d as a white woman<\/a>.
