Should Harris Talk Much About Her Racial Identity? Many Voters Say No.<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Kamala Harris<\/a> has long resisted attempts by others to categorize her identity. \u201cI am who I am,\u201d she once said. \u201cI\u2019m good with it. You might need to figure it out, but I\u2019m fine with it.\u201d Erin Schaff\/The New York Times<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Even as Trump plays up racial divisions, many Americans said they would rather not dwell on race or identity. \u201cWe can all see that you\u2019re Black.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, we have eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the somewhat jaded response by Larhonda Marshall, a 42-year-old health care worker from Chicago<\/a>, about all the attention being paid to Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019s<\/a> racial identity.<\/p>\n

As a Black woman herself, Ms. Marshall said that the symbolism of a Harris victory would surely be on her mind as she considers her vote for president. But it was not the most important factor at all, she said. And she wishes the Harris supporters who keep mentioning it would drop it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m tired of hearing it,\u201d Ms. Marshall said. \u201cThat\u2019s not an issue. I just want what\u2019s best for the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

This week, after former President Donald J. Trump<\/a> claimed falsely<\/a> that Ms. Harris \u201chappened to turn Black\u201d only recently, the vice president did not attempt to clarify the obvious: that she has, in fact, been Black all her life…<\/p>\n
