Dohr Professor of Law<br \/>\n<em>Columbia University<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Most people who appear phenotypically &#8220;black&#8221; don&#8217;t play around when the government asks them to report their race.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last week, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.melissaharrislacewell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Melissa Harris-Lacewell<\/a> wrote an insightful column, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=6740\" target=\"_blank\">Black by Choice<\/a>,&#8221; about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=6435\" target=\"_blank\">President Obama&#8217;s having checked the box marked &#8220;Black, African American or Negro&#8221; on his Census form<\/a>.
