Hawkins<\/a><\/strong>, Assistant Professor of English<br \/>\n<em>University of North Texas<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This essay argues that, for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_james\" target=\"_blank\">James<\/a>, the visible face and body conceal some genetic \u201creality\u201d or heritage, which he figures in both <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Sense_of_the_Past\" target=\"_blank\">The Sense of the Past<\/a><\/em> and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Jolly_Corner\" target=\"_blank\">The Jolly Corner<\/a>\u201d as the specter of unacknowledged racial difference. In both works, James fuses evolutionary biology and the ghostly, thematizing turn-of-the-century anxieties regarding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=450\" target=\"_blank\">miscegenation<\/a>.
