In particular, we will examine narratives where African Americans \u201cpass\u201d for white and vice versa. While the popularity of passing as a historical phenomenon is debatable, it is incontestably a source of literary richness. This course is also about interraciality and the meaning of race itself, as the possibility of passing exposes hidden ambiguities and anxieties about race in the United States. Texts we will read may include those by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jessie_Redmon_Fauset\" target=\"_blank\">Jessie Fauset<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nella_Larsen\" target=\"_blank\">Nella Larsen<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Weldon_Johnson\" target=\"_blank\">James Weldon Johnson<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_Twain\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Twain<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waltermosley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Walter Mosley<\/a>. This is a discussion-based course, so come prepared to participate.
