Stonequist<\/a><\/strong> (1901-1979), Professor of Sociology<br \/>\n<em>Skidmore College<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=462\" target=\"_blank\">marginal man<\/a> arises in a bi-cultural or multi-cultural situation.\u00a0 The natural desire of the mixed-blood is to advance toward the group occupying the higher status.\u00a0 He may be forced to accept the status of the lower group, possibly becoming their leader.\u00a0 He may be rejected by both groups.\u00a0 Where accommodation, rather than conflict, prevails, the mixed blood may constitute a middle class.\u00a0 With intermarriage the mixed-blood approximates more nearly the status of the dominate race.\u00a0 The marginal individual experiences what <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/W._E._B._Du_Bois\" target=\"_blank\">[W. E.
